YOU FOUND ME!

My name is Cole Gibsen and welcome to my YA Scavenger Hunt Stop. I love sushi, sewing cosplay costumes, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Look! Here I am with Xander!
On this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each participating YA author, you also get a secret number. Add up the numbers and enter the total for a chance to win a major prize--one lucky winner will receive one signed book from each participating author on my team in the hunt. But play fast, this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online until Sunday, October 6th at 2:00 P.M. CST.

You can start right here or you can go to the YA Scavenger Hunt Homepage to find out all about the hunt. There are THREE contests going on simultaneously and you can enter one, two, or all three! I am a member of the GOLD team. There is also a red team and a blue team. If you go on the other hunts you'll a chance to win a whole other set of books!

If you'd like to find out more about the hunt, see the links to all the authors participating, see the full list of prizes up for grabs, or if you get lost along the way, be sure to check back at the YA Scavenger Hunt Homepage.

Looking for my exclusive bonus content? Keep searching! Somewhere on this blog hop I've hidden a snippet from SHINOBI, the third and final book in the KATANA series due out March, 2014. Before you go looking, check out the amazing author I'm hosting. But first, a few rules.
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">To save a kingdom, Zara must choose
between a prince who could be the answer and a rising rebellion that threatens
to take control.

When Zara Dane is chosen to marry Prince Sebastian Hart, son of the man who
ordered her father’s capture, Zara knows she must fight to save everything she
loves from ruin.

Being betrothed to the prince means a life trapped behind the towering stone
walls of the Camelot-forged realm. Under the watchful eye of the prince's first
knight, Sir Devlan Capra, changing her future becomes difficult.

When an unlikely rebel reveals the truth about the deadly secrets that fuel
King Hart’s twisted world, Zara’s path to rescue her father becomes clouded by
deception. The Rebels clear her path by forcing Zara’s hand with an ultimatum:
sway Prince Sebastian to join the Rebels, convincing him of his father’s evil
nature, or they will take him out.

But Zara is uncertain about a future under the Rebels’ command and where the
prince’s heart truly lies. She must decide who to trust, what to believe, and
what she’s truly fighting for before the king destroys all of Karm, including
her heart.

I'll just reveal it now!"

I really love this cover, guys. I mean, I love all my covers but this is by far my favorite. I think it wraps up the series so nicely. Each cover has been perfect for its book. There's a symbolism in the way Rileigh stands alone on the first cover. And I think the dark colors of the second cover mirror the darker tones of the second book.

Likewise, I love how Rileigh is not alone on the cover of the third book, because the story of the third book isn't hers alone. But more on that later when I can reveal the back cover summary. For now, I'll leave you to speculate. *grin*
And I asked:

How do you define success? Is it getting published? Making the NY Times List? Or just finishing a novel?

I asked this question because one of my good friends became a life coach and, after talking about my career, she asked me this question and it really got me thinking.

My own answer is constantly shifting and changing. At first, I thought just getting a publishing contract would be enough. But it turns out that was only the sample taste in the start of my writing addiction. For me, I want to write forever. Just the other day I was listening to a college student talk about their major and I realized now that I've come this far, I could never settle for anything el
se than sitting at my computer all day and writing. And if I get to do just that for the rest of my life, well, that would be a success.

So now it's your turn. How would you define success?

Rather than answer them individually, I decided to write a blog post explaining what I'm doing.

I hate running.

OMG do I hate running. And this is nothing new. Even in high school, when I was on the pom squad and in the best shape of my life, I still hated running. My freshman year, it was a P.E. requirement to complete a mile run. I did it in eleven minutes. Did I mention I hate running?

So then two winters ago I heard about an app called Zombies, Run! which was supposed to simulate you, the runner, being chased by zombies. I thought, if anything could make me run, zombies sure could. So I bought the app and I found out Zombies, Run! was so much more than I thought.

Not only is it a fitness app, it's also part video game. Once you start the app and enable the GPS on your phone, voice actors begin to tell you the story of a helicopter (that you're on) shot out of the sky. You land in the middle of an area overrun with zombies. A radio transmission leads you to a town where you are taken in as long as you become one of the many "Runners" or people who run supply missions into the zombie infested areas. Thus begins your journey as Runner 5.

You can enable your own music play list to play during the intermissions between the story. During which, a voice will periodically cut through the music to tell you if you've found a supply or if zombies are nearby.

I hate running.

But I will run like a gazelle when I hear the sound of moaning creeping up behind me in my headphones. When you hear the zombies, you need to haul butt. The GPS in your phone keeps track of your pace and if you don't hurry, you won't be able to evade the mob. Once you've successfully evaded the mob, you can slow your pace and resume the story. However, if you are overcome by the mob, you'll lose valuable supplies in order to get away.

Sound fun? It really is. You just have to be careful that you don't get so wrapped up in the game that you lose focus on your surroundings--you wouldn't want to run in front of a car or anything. Today, for example, I completed three miles and had just returned home when I was alerted to zombies. With no where to go, I had to run circles around my tiny backyard until I'd successfully evaded them, all the while my neighbors watched like this: 0.o.

So if you're like me, and need some prompting to run, or maybe you're just a zombie enthusiast, I highly recommend purchasing the Zombies, Run! app for $3.99. Who knows? Maybe it will be the training you need to save your life in the event of a real Zombie Apocalypse.

Happy Wednesday!

We all know it's important to read fiction if you want to write fiction, but what about reading non-fiction? How much non-fiction do you read? What kinds of non-fiction books do you read, and why? Has reading non-fiction influenced your fiction writing style?

Surprisingly enough, I do read a ton of nonfiction. Because of my day job as a professional dog trainer, I'm always reading the latest dog training book. I've always found canine behavior fascinating and I'm a firm believer that, no matter what your trade, you never stop learning. So if there's a new technique out there for modifying behavior, I want to know about it. Likewise, I also want to know the latest discoveries in canine behavior as well as learning applications. Did you know the average canine can learn approximately 200 words? Did you know there's a Border Collie in Germany who uses deductive reasoning to guess the name of a toy its owner never called by name before? Did you know a popular current theory is not that man domesticated the dog but rather, dogs--the opportunists that they are--domesticated themselves for a free meal?

Sorry, I'm a dog nerd and I digress.

Likewise, I read a ton of nonfiction for my writing career as well. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford the $10,000 price tag that comes with a research trip to Japan, so all of my research for the KATANA series had to come through the tons and tons of books I checked out from the library.

And I'm also an avid collector of how-to writing books. Recently I purchased THE EMOTION THESAURUS by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. What a fantastic book! As someone who tends to use the same reactions over and over this book provides authors with a whole array of physical and mental reactions (both short and long term) that a character could have given any emotion. Love, Love, LOVE this book! It's never out of hands reach when I'm writing or revising.

So what about you? What's the last nonfiction book you read?

Once again I'm a day late. I fully intended to blog yesterday but I was really down in the dumps. Sounds lame, I know, but I'm really bad at the social media stuff when I'm feeling down. Depression makes me antisocial. Luckily, the sun is out today and I'm feeling a lot better.

So now on with the chain. This week's blog chain was started by Kate who asks:

As a reader and/or a writer what are some of your favorite fiction tropes? Are you sucker for secretly in love with best friend type stories, stories set in mysterious boarding school stories, stories that contain time travel, or something else entirely? As a writer how do you try to give the tropes you tackle in your own books a fresh spin?

Hmmm...

My tastes are pretty across the board. But if I were forced to choose, I think my favorite story is the superhero's journey. (I know. I've shocked you all, right? *grin*) I love a good "someone discovers they have superpowers and now they must figure out how to control them and if they're going to use them for good or evil" story.

As an avid reader of comic books I love how this has been handled in a hundred different ways from Captain America (It is my duty to serve) to Spider Man (Um, I'm just a teen trying to survive high school) to the Phoenix (I think I'm good, yet there's a part of me that wants to engulf the world in flames. So, yeah...) to Storm (You want to worship me as a God? I suppose that won't hurt.)

As Uncle Ben once said, "With great power comes great responsibility." But what if those with the power think it's a curse? The entire situation spins on its head. And that is why the super hero trope is my favorite.

So what about you? What's your favorite fiction trope?

For more links along the chain, check out Alyson's post before mine and Amparo's post today!

And now, because it's almost Friday, I will leave you with the best video ever created.
Tomoe was
especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features.
She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a

unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent,
Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor,

And like always, I'm a day late and a buck short. This book release is going to be the death of me--but would I have it any other way? Hells to the no!

Anyway, this round of the blog chain was started by the brilliant Margie Gelbwasser who asks:

Pick
a book or story and imagine it in a new genre. For example, what would
Oliver Twist be like if it was a sci-fi novel. Would Fagin have been a
robot? Do you prefer you new creation or the original?

Ummm....

I think my head just exploded.

There are way too many awesome possibilities out there for me to snag a single one. Some of my favorites through, are not necessarily changing genres but modernizing them. Remember the book Emma by Jane Austin that we all had to read in high school? Yeah it was fun, but oh my gawd did I love when they made it into a teen movie.

Remember this?

Yeah...so great. Except for the fact that Cher's love interest is now staring in a movie called This is Forty. Seriously, when did that happen? But I digress.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, taking stories from history and giving them modern spins. There's a historical Japanese warrior I want to bring to life, but unfortunately she has to wait her turn behind some other pending projects.

So how about you? What classic story would you like to give a new spin to? For other answers please check out Amparo's and Alyson's blogs.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The balancing act. How do you balance your writing time with everything else in your life--including kids, job, book promotion.

Oh gosh, that is an excellent question. Really, the answer is I wouldn't be able to if I hadn't quit my job to become a writer. When I was working full time, the only time I had to write was on my lunch breaks and evenings after my daughter went to sleep. This translated to me writing a book in a year. Now that I'm home and can write all day while my daughter's at school, I can now write a book every three months and still spend time with my family when they are home from work and school.

Staying home was absolutely key to me being able to balance writing and family. And let me tell you, while writing full time may sound like a wonderful life--and it is!--I've had to make huge sacrifices to be able to sit here every day and write.

As a published author I make money. YAY!

But as a published author I make about 1/4th what I did when I worked my desk job. BOO! :(

Luckily, I have a husband who both supports me and has faith that my career will continue to grow. And because of this, he wanted to give me every opportunity to succeed. Believe me ladies, I know how good I got it. He's a keeper.

So in order to make it work, my husband and I sat down and we had to make some serious cuts in our budget. Here's what we came up with:

1. No car payments. One of our cars is almost ten years old. The other is a salvage title. A car payment is absolutely out of the question, so as long as the wheels continue to spin, we're driving the cars we have into the ground.

2. No new furniture. That doesn't mean it doesn't have to be nice. When my daughter outgrew her toddler furniture, I scoured Craigslist for weeks until I found the most adorable girl's bedroom furniture in practically new condition. Our massive sectional sofa? Craigslist. Our bedroom set? Antique store. Second hand doesn't have to mean junky and 99% of the time no one will ever know.

3. Craigslist. Again, I don't know how I would have made it this far without it. When it comes to things we want, but don't absolutely need, Craigslist has been a Godsend. Last year, my husband and I took up biking and we wanted a bike trailer to pull the kiddo in. A bike trailer new in stores can cost up to $300. I spent $40 for one I found on Craigslist that had only been used once.

4. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm pretty sure my husband and I were the last people in this country to buy a flat screen T.V. Why spend the extra money when our massively large, too heavy to steal, tube television worked just fine? We ended up finally buying our first flat screen a couple months ago when we stumbled across an "Open Item" deal that was too good to pass up.

5. Tax deduct EVERYTHING. Seriously. The coffee I drink at my crit group? DEDUCTION! The mileage I drive to get there? DEDUCTION! My computer? iPad? Phone and phone bill? Internet bill? Paper? Computer? Swag? Conference and hotel fees? A fraction of my mortgage because I have a home office? DEDUCTION! The best money we ever spent was on an accountant who knew his stuff. I've learned to save every receipt and at the end of the year I'm usually rewarded with a big refund.

6. Eat at home! This was a biggie. When I was working, my husband and I usually ate out every night. It's insanity how much money that can suck out of your pockets. So now we make it a point to pack lunches, cook dinner, and we splurged on an espresso machine so we can even have our latte fix.

7. Find places to write where you don't have to spend money. I don't know about you, but I usually work better out of my house. I love Panera just as much as the next girl, but going there everyday to write was getting to be too much for my budget. So now I go to my local library. They have free wifi, quiet work desks, and outlets galore! Plus, my constant presence there enabled me to get to know the entire library staff who has been a huge source of help when it came to telling other libraries about me, as well as hosting my launch party. If you don't know your local librarians, get yourself to your library now!

8. Tax deduct vacations! Seriously. Let's say your character grew up in Florida. Obviously you need to travel there for research, right? The same thing goes for conferences. Next year RT is being held in NOLA, a place I've wanted to visit my entire life. Since I can deduct travel to the conference location as well as hotel fees, my husband and I decided to tack on a few extra days for sight seeing.

So that's my guide to staying home and writing on a budget. I'd love to hear if any of you have any suggestions that I missed. To follow more of the chain and read other responses to this question, please check out Alyson's post from yesterday and Amparo's post today! Happy Valentines Day!!!Cole Gibsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08384758019054580574noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332629404764741341.post-11878085010051957282013-01-31T10:35:00.001-06:002013-01-31T10:35:05.549-06:00New Blog Chain Post: What I'm working on nowOops, it looks like last time I was on the blog chain I responded to the wrong post. So this time I'll be responding to Katrina's question:

Write
about your next writing project. What is the genre? Is is one you've
written before or is it a new venture? Do you have it all figured out or
is it just a germ of an idea? What did you learn from your latest
writing project that will make this one even better?

I'm on deadline. So right now, my current writing project is book 3 of my KATANA series currently titled INCHUKEN. I'm really excited about this book because it's by far my most "twisty" when it comes to plot twists. I really wanted to push myself as a writer to see if I could create a book that keeps people guessing until the end. I can't say too much about the plot at this point, but I can say Rileigh and Quentin will never be the same again.

I know--I'm such a tease. :D INCHUKEN will be out March of next year. But if you're looking to get another KATANA fix, SENSHI the sequel will be out March 8th!

I remember reading this novel for the first time years ago and knowing instantly someday it would be published. And now that day is here and the publisher is non other than the mover and shaker Entangled Publishing!

If you're looking for a novel with mystery, suspense, action, romance, and heartbreak, then you need to check this novel out now. It won't disappoint. You can check it out here.
And here's the description:
Minuette Sinclair's parents are in trouble and her fake fiancé is too. A
legendary lost necklace might be their salvation, and Min is determined
to find it and use it to buy her family and fiancé out of their
misfortunes.

Master thief Bryant Westley is also looking for
the fabled necklace. He knows Min’s got information he can use so he
poses as her dance instructor and tries to seduce it from her. What he
doesn’t count on are his feelings for her. He offers to partner up in
the search – even though she is a distraction he can’t afford.

Things
become more complicated when Min realizes that her convenient
engagement means more to her fake fiancé than her and that she’s fallen
in love with Bryant. Bryant realizes that he can’t double cross the
young lady he’s come to love. Can they find the necklace together and
admit their love before it’s too late?

t's
a new year, and some writers have taken it upon themselves to switch
things up. *points at self* It might be the genres you write in or your
revision process. It might be your main character's voice. What's one
thing you've chosen to change in your writing this new year? Why do you
wish to change it? If there's nothing you're going to change, why do you
think it should remain as is?

It's so funny Amparo would choose to ask this question because I was literally thinking about this just the other day. For me, if I could change one thing about my writing, it would be the speed at which I write. Typically, I can finish (write and edit) approximately two books a year but I would love to make that number "three." And I've been giving it a lot of thought as to how I might increase this number.

One of the biggest threats to my writing is my self confidence. Nothing can push me to a grinding halt faster than a bout of "I suck" which, thanks to a negative influence in my childhood, I suffer with "I suck" all the time. I've never been one of those writers who writes because they think they're bestowing some gift on the world with their prose. No, I write because it's something I enjoy doing. It's healing for me--almost like meditation. And sometimes I get a check for it which makes it all the better.

Because of my "I suck syndrome" or "ISS" I've lived (and still do) in constant fear of being judged and being judged harshly. In fact, if I try something and am not instantly good at it, it scares the hell out of me and I usually give it up (guitar, gardening, any and all sports, etc.) Writing was the first thing I pursued through my ISS and it was hard. Each harsh critique felt like a punch in the gut, each rejection a kick to the face. But what I think pulled me through it is the fact that with writing, you can suffer with ISS alone, the rejections and criticism are seldom done in public. I say seldom because there was this one time an agent told me that, "while you're writing is okay, it doesn't make me want to put you in a bag and take you to New York with me," in front of a crowd of onlookers. It was all I could do not to melt into a puddle on the floor right then and there.

What I've found works for me in avoiding a flare up of ISS, and to keep my writing flowing, is to cut myself off from anything that might cause me self doubt. So my resolutions for writing this year are to avoid the following:

1. Goodreads. It's true that I have way more good reviews than bad ones. And while I'm to the point where I'm mostly numb to bad reviews, there's still the occasional one that will cut me to the core. And when I'm doubting myself, I can't write. So I'm better off staying away.

2. Publisher's Marketplace. It's a great website for finding out about the latest book deals. But it's also a great way to start to doubt yourself (Why didn't I get a book deal like that? How come I haven't sold foreign rights? It must be because I suck...) as well as resent other writers' successes when I should be celebrating with them. So I'm going to stay away. What I don't know can't hurt me.

3. Twitter. I love Twitter. I love interacting with other writers and readers. There's no way I could give it up entirely, but I'm definitely creating a resolution to spend less time there for the same reason I'm going to avoid Publisher's Marketplace. For as much as I love Twitter, there's a lot of "Look at me! I got a new sale! I got a movie deal! I made a major list! Etc." And there's nothing wrong with that. I love celebrating the successes of my friends. But when I'm suffering from a bout of ISS, sometimes these heralds of good tidings feel like salt in my already very open wounds.

So those are my resolution for the coming year. I'm confident with these changes I can stave off the ISS which has always resulted in a more productive, happier Cole. In fact, it's only January and I already have one book almost halfway finished. Who knows? Maybe I can push my goal to four!

So how about you? Do you suffer from I suck syndrome "ISS", too? What things do you do to combat it?

For more writing goals, please check out Alyson's post from yesterday and make sure to see what Amparo has to say about the subject tomorrow.

Happy Wednesday!

This week's blog chain was started by always amazing Christine Fronseca who asks:

How dark is too dark for your aesthetic? And is writing "dark" and "emotional" a bad thing?

Interesting question. There's only ever been one book I've read that I almost didn't finish because I found it too dark. That book would be Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott.

Now don't get me wrong, Elizabeth Scott is an amazing author. And daring. She took on the subject of kidnapping and pedophilia and she didn't always fade to black when the scenes became intense and oh-my-God-uncomfortable.

Now is that a good thing or a bad thing? In my opinion, it's a valuable book that can raise awareness and open the lines of discussion between parent and child (providing the parent has deemed the child old enough and mature enough to handle such a provocative topic.) Does kidnapping occur in this country? Unfortunately, yes. Pedophilia? Oh, how I wish it didn't. So why would we try and pretend they didn't? In my opinion, knowledge has always been the best weapon anyone can possess.

You can tell when reading Living Dead Girl that Ms. Scott really did her homework. I found the the actual abduction of the girl in the book to be horrifyingly genius. And because of that, I feel like I've better prepared my child when we've had the "don't go with strangers" talk. And it's a talk we'll keep having until she's thirty and can recite the lines by memory. And for that alone I feel like I owe Ms. Scott a debt of gratitude.

So back to the question, is writing "dark" and "emotional" a bad thing? I don't think there's any one correct answer. When it comes to books, I think they each hold opportunities for learning and shared dialogue between parent and child. And it's up to the parent to decide when their child is ready.

So now I'd love to hear from you? What are your opinions on when dark is too dark? For more opinions, check out Alyson's post from yesterday and Amparo who will post after me.
Only this time, I'm afraid my answer is going to be short and sweet due to the fact I finally lost the battle with the cold I'd been fighting off since Monday.

This blog chain was started by Sandra Ulbrich who asks:

During National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), writers attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Do you set daily writing goals for yourself, either a certain word count or time spent on writing? Does this include other writing-related activities, like research, plotting, or revising? Do you focus on reaching the end of the journey (such as finishing your current project), or do you enjoy the writing process along the way?

Once upon a time, I tried to fit writing into my life wherever I could. When I owned my own business, I would write in between appointments. When I worked as a sales associate, I'd email myself my MS and work on it whenever the boss wasn't looking. As a stay at home mom, my free time became even more limited. But now, with the kiddo in school full time, for the first time in my life, I have honest to God writing time! AND THE PEOPLE REJOICED!

And now, wouldn't you know it, I'm actually getting shiznit done. Before this year, I wrote a book a year, because that's all I had time for. But with eight glorious hours to myself, I wrote an entire novel (85K) in August. Granted, I was really pushing myself and kept a strict goal of 3K a day. I don't think I'll do that again unless my back's against a wall because my house fell apart, I stopped going to the gym, and my family ate garbage every day. Everyday was a fight with my own guilt to keep moving forward.

I haven't written anything new in the last two months as I've been editing. But now that I'm finished, I have several potential projects I'm eyeing. I've decided my goal for my next project will be 2K a day. That way I can get 7 pages in, and still keep up with my house and spend time with my family. I haven't found the perfect balance yet, but I'm hoping this brings me closer to it.

I'm off to drink some tea and take a handful of vitamin C. In the meantime, I'd love to hear your daily writing goals and how you balance your writing and your life!

There are so many book-to-movie adaptations out there. Which are your
favorites? Which are your least favorites? Why? Do you make sure you've
read a book before you go see the movie adaptation, or do you prefer to
read it after, or not at all?

This is a great question. And, as a comic book geek, I have to expand this question to comic books. All I can say is, thank you Jesus for Joss Whedon. The Avengers? Yes, yes, and yes again.

Okay, but maybe I'm being a little dramatic. Still, it's obvious Joss read the comics and wanted to keep the movie as authentic as possible for the diehard fans. The X-Men movies on the other hand?

And that's because the Phoenix is my all time favorite character and to see her mutilated onscreen was too painful to watch. And seriously, she vaporized Cyclops? Now, there are many times in the comics (when he mind screws Emma Frost for one) when I wished she vaporized Scott. And there were so many things they screwed up or got lazy with. (Lady Deathstrike anyone.) Now rumor has it that Marvel might try and redeem itself with its new Wolverine movie. Supposedly it takes place in Japan and will address the Logan (Wolverine)/ Ureko (Lady Deathstrike) romance. There will be samurais (BONUS!) but Joss is not the director (FAIL.)

So, we'll see. I'm going to cross my fingers and wish for the best. And, while I'm wishing, could I please get a Joss Whedon X-Men reboot? Pretty please?

If not, can I have an entire movie about Gambit? Yow-zah!

Wow. So I got off topic in a big way. To see more authors discuss this topic (and do a better job of staying on topic) Please check out Alyson's blog who posted on this topic before me. And tomorrow check out Amparo's blog to get her take.

How about you? What are your favorite/least favorite book to move adaptations? Cole Gibsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08384758019054580574noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332629404764741341.post-10126780294846028072012-10-10T08:00:00.000-05:002012-10-10T08:00:04.363-05:00Blog Chain: A Rose By Any Other Name...The round on the blog chain was started by the lovely Kate Karyus Quinn. She asks:

What's in a name? What if Harry Potter had been Larry Snotter? What if Edward was Jacob and Jacob was Edward? What favorite books had character names that you loved or hated? And how do you come up with your own character names?

Hmm, what would Shakespeare say? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet?

I don't know. I know some writers take a lot of time coming up with the perfect name for their characters. Personally, sometimes when I'm stuck, I'll just hit the button on the 'ol name generator. For me, I spent a lot more time working on character traits and background than I do on names. I'd like to think that if I've don't my job as a writer, you're going to relate to and care about my characters no matter what I call them.

The only time I have difficulties with a character's name is if it's a name I have no idea how to pronounce. Case in point; Hermoine Granger. Before the movies, I hadn't a clue how her name was suposed to be pronounced. It drove me up a wall everytime I read it because it would halt my reading as I tried to come up with a pronounciation. Eventually I gave up and started calling her "Harmony" in my head--at least until the movies came out. Even after the movies, when Hermoine introduces herself I was like, "Seriously? THAT'S how you pronounce it?" Turns out I was nowhere close.

I'll just stick with Harmony.

To see more answers on this topic, check out Alyson Greene's blog. She posted her answer here. And tomorrow, be sure to check Amparo Ortiz's blog (speaking of names, isn't that gorgeous?) tomorrow for her post.

So now you tell me what you think. What's in a name? And do you think it even matters?

The last seven days have been nothing but WTF moments. One thing after another after another. My favorite was when I found out the a company's billing department erroneously reported us to the credit bureau. Has that ever happened to anyone else? I hope it never does because we are talking major NIGHTMARE to get fixed. And then the car broke down, and the dog got sick, and the brand new roof started to leak...Yeeeeeaaaaaah.

And did I tell you guys I started taking harmonica lessons? I know. Silly, right? (*in Jerry Springer voice* Don't judge--you don't know me.) But seriously SO MUCH FUN. I look forward to my lessons all week. And my teacher's name is Fred "JellyJaw" Johnson. (I just love that.) And not only are the harmonica lessons, fun, but last week, during my lesson, his neighbor (who JellyJaw says is a drug dealer) got busted by the cops and we got to watch the whole thing including the car repo. Sweet.

Anywho, tomorrow's another day, right?

Oh, and the blog chain starts back up tomorrow. Whoo hoo!

And lastly, if you're new to my blog, here's some things you should know:

1. Even though we're in a recession, I'm very liberal with commas. Commas for all!
2. I love exclaimation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3. I'm dyslexic so sometimes the words aren't always "prettyfied" but I'm pretty good about correcting things when *if* I spot them.
4. I like to make up words. See above.
5. My favorite word is "seriously." SRSLY
5. Right now, the Fresh Prince of BelAire theme song is stuck in my head. Gah.

Yo Holmes, smell ya later!Cole Gibsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08384758019054580574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332629404764741341.post-13334860487761477432012-07-26T08:00:00.000-05:002012-07-26T13:43:22.785-05:00SENSHI Cover Reveal and Prizes GALORE!I know guys. I admit it. I've been a terrible blogger these past few months. But oh, what a crazy couple of months they've been! Between making St. Louis's bestsellers list, finding out KATANA was getting another print run, and meeting so many awesome readers and writers at conferences and events, I can hardly keep my head from spinning right off my neck at the sheer awesomeness of it all!

But back to the real reason you're here. The cover unveiling. Oh guys, you just don't even understand how much I love it. Bruce Lee has always been one of my biggest heroes and this cover could practically be a Bruce Lee movie poster--literally my first thought when I saw it. And it's also got a Kill Bill vibe going for it too. <3! <3! <3!

Want to see it?

Here's how it works. Below are several blogs that have unveiled my cover. And each blog is giving away a different prize, they range from:
