Writing: Not for the Faint at Heart!

SQUEEEEEEEEE! I just stumbled upon what I think is one of the coolest websites around: Dr. Wicked's Write or Die

What is Write or Die?

I pulled this quote from the website:

Write or Die is a web application that encourages writing by punishing the tendency to avoid writing. Start typing in the box. As long as you keep typing, you're fine, but once you stop typing, you have a grace period of a certain number of seconds and then there are consequences.

There are three different consequences that you can set up for yourself:

1. Gentle Mode: You get a sweet pop up message that urges you to keep writing if you stop.
2. Normal Mode: Plays obnoxious music when you stop writing and won't stop untilyou start pounding on the keys.
3. (My personal favorite) KAMIKAZE Mode: will start DELETING WORDS if you stop writing. Did you hear me?

IT WILL DELETE YOUR WORDS!!!

Now how's that for some motivation?

Hard Core.

  1. Oooh. That's just mean.

The only kamikazes I've ever liked were the ones served in a shot glass.

    Alas, those days are over.

  2. Dude, I would be so screwed if I used that...

  3. I just turn into a you-know-what when someone interrupts me during a write-or-die session. I have been banned from engaging in it when the husband's home and/or the kids are awake. Brutal, but effective. Getting the words out is the hard part for me. I don't mind doing revisions.

  4. I used that last year during NaNoWriMo. I don't think I wrote anything great while it was on (too much pressure!), but at least I kept writing.

  5. Ohhhhhh SNAP. I think I would panic and my hands would cramp up if I were in kamikaze mode. BRUTAL!

Has anyone tried it and lived to tell the tale? :P Or do you just let it Rick Roll you if you stop?

  6. I tried it yesterday on kamikaze mode and managed 1000 words in 20 minutes! That's a record for me. Granted, a lot of it was pretty bad, but it's nothing that a little editing later can't clean up.
